December, 2024
Dear Valued Volunteers and Friends of Plattsburgh Cares,
Roxham Road was closed after Canada and the U.S. changed the Safe Third Country Agreement in March, 2023, expanding its terms to cover the entire land border rather than just formal crossings.
By June, 2023, we had to refocus our mission. We held fruitful discussions with our generous primary grantors: The Adirondack Foundation, Generous Acts Grant, Chapel Hill Foundation and Cloudsplitter Foundation.
We now can sustain our humanitarian mission by providing food and toiletries for stranded travelers and others in our community who are homeless or food insecure. Every three weeks, with the help of our dedicated volunteers, we assemble and deliver about 150 bags of nonperishable food (enough for two-three days) to a number of sites in the community:
— motels that provide emergency housing.
–Plattsburgh Public Library.
–Department of Social Services.
–CVPH Medical Center Emergency Department.
–the Office of the Mayor of Champlain, NY.
–St. Joseph’s Outreach Center, Plattsburgh, NY.
In addition, we have received generous donations of food and supplies for the bags from community partners.
In emergency situations, when all other resources are exhausted, we are still called upon to fill the need for bus tickets, taxis, lodging and other emergency expenses. However, we must limit these expenditures in order to not deplete our funds. We continue to receive non-grant funding from individuals like you, which helps support these activities. Our grant funding is designated to food support.
We have had enormous support, but the immediate humanitarian need is limitless.
We are so grateful to our grantors, our volunteers, our community partners and all those who donate money, time, energy and attention to Plattsburgh Cares and those we serve.
Please consider contributing or volunteering. Click on “Want to help” at the bottom of our homepage.
In gratitude and on behalf of the Executive Committee,
